IFISC (Institute for Cross-Disciplinary Physics and Complex Systems)

IFISC is a joint research Institute of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). IFISC´s mission is to develop interdisciplinary and strategic research, acknowledging that important avenues of scientific development occur at the borders of established fields.

 Complexitat.cat - Barcelona Knowledge Campus (CxCAT - BKC)

In Catalonia, a series of research groups that can be labeled with the common denomination of complex systems have emerged almost spontaneously. The goal of this Catalan Complex Consortium is to play the role of a nucleation center for these groups in order to foster the mutual knowledge, the transversality of approaches and techniques, and the cross-fertilization of ideas.

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M)

Coordinated by the Grupo Interdisciplinar de Sistemas Complejos (Cross-disciplinary Group for Complex Systems, GISC) this consortium involves researchers from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid from the Departments of Mathematics, Telematics and Economics. The group deals with issues at the frontiers of Physics, Mathematics, Computer Simulations and Data Mining with Biology, Ecology, Social Sciences, and Materials Science.

IMDEA Networks is part of the IMDEA initiative (8 institutes), started in 2006. It is a not-for-profit research centre (including researchers and Ph D students) supported by Comunidad de Madrid and research grants, aiming at research of excellence in networks and communications, at attracting excellent human capital and at transferring technology to companies and start-ups. INSISOC (Social Systems Engineering Centre)

The Institute mission is to research in Complex Social Systems: physical landscapes populated by social agents.  Working from Universidad de Valladolid and Universidad de Burgos, its focus is on an integrative approach from Engineering, Social Sciences and Management. Agent Based Modelling and Agent Based Social Simulation provide the framework we have adopted to deal with complex systems.

 Complexitat.cat - Universitat Rovira i Virgili (CxCAT - URV)

The group has participated in the scientific development of the field of complex networks. On the one hand by analyzing in detail the phenomenon of phase synchronization of oscillators, stochastic dynamics of Boolean networks, processes, information search, dynamic propagation of opinions, or dynamic analysis of game theory, to give some examples. On the other hand, we have actively contributed in developing methods and algorithms for the determination of static modules in complex networks. Arts Santa Mònica

The Arts Santa Mònica of Barcelona is a space of convergence and crossover between the different disciplines of contemporary artistic creation and science, thought and communication. Attentive to the cultural mutations and social changes accompanying the transition to the knowledge society, and working in conjunction with universities and academic institutions, research institutes and centres for the production, Arts Santa Mònica generates ideas, projects, research and materials that stimulate dialogue between the local and the global dimension of society today. It had almost 200 000 visitors in 2010.

Its Laboratory space hosts exhibitions and projects that relate art, science and technology. The working methodology of Laboratory is built and developed with an agreement with Universitat de Barcelona to have scientific research fully involved. Complexity sciences and new technologies with impact in social and cultural contexts are important issues for us and full of potential considering exhibition space as a location for experimentation and research. We are additionallly interested in its innovative and creative forms where link to arts and humanities is also needed.

Barcelona Supercomputing Center

Barcelona Supercomputing Centre is developing a research line focused on the design of applications specially designed for their use in Social Sciences and policy analysis areas. This group is based on CASE (Computer Applications in Science & Engineering) department, and has developed a new simulator capable of executing Agent-Based Models of human societies in a HPC environment, in order to explore:

    - Emergence of behavioural patterns in human societies, understood as complex systems

    - Interaction between societies and their relationship with environment and landscape

    - Impact of change in human groups and population dynamics (both ancient and present)

    - Design of artificial societies as models to understand human behaviour

    - Methodological and theoretical foundations of social simulation


These topics are analysed from a multidisciplinary approach, as CASE joins efforts with research groups belonging to different disciplines, with diverse perspectives of social interaction  (i.e. Archaeology, Demography, Economy, Heritage, History and Sociology).

IFCA (Instituto de Fisica de Cantabria)

IFCA is a joint research Institute of the University of Cantabria (UC) and the Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). IFCA is a center oriented to basic research in physics, covering from elementary particle physics to astrophysics, as well as complex systems, and with a new line on advanced computing and e-science.

Expertise in relation to FuturICT:

Experience in e-infrastructure, as coordinator of the Spanish Grid Initiative and participant in the Spanish Supercomputing Network. Large simulations and very large data volumes processing. Data analysis techniques. Integration of real time instrumentation in the e-infrastructure.

BIFI (Institute for Biocomputation and Physics of Complex Systems)

BIFI is a research Institute at the University of Zaragoza that promotes inter and multidisciplinary research to face big challenges in innovation and development.

BIFI’s main research areas are: Biochemistry, Biophysics, Physics of Complex Systems and Computing. BIFI hosts both fundamental and applied research, applying common techniques and multidisciplinary approaches to complex problems. Researchers from the Universidad de Zaragoza and other universities form the Institute.

Expertise in relation to FuturICT:

All the computing resources (computing and storage providers, hosting of any hardware or middleware solution, design of hardware for dedicated computers, etc) at BIFI will be at the disposal of the FutureICT teams. Technical, modeling and theoretical expertise includes: the statistical characterization of natural and artificial networks; the development of models for accurate structural and dynamical characterization of socio-technological systems (including online networks); the in-depth study of dynamical processes on complex networks and the emergence of collective behavior; the use of agent-based modeling and large-scale data driven simulations, the implementation of state-of-the-art epidemiological models; as well as porting of applications (including user support); parallelization and optimization; advanced user interfaces design; interconnection of technologies with software and middleware research; advanced visualization; and dissemination, teaching and citizen-science related projects.

IIIA - Artificial Intelligence Research Institute

The IIIA is a research centre, belonging to the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). Its mission is to carry out very high quality research in Artificial Intelligence keeping a good balance between basic research and applications. The IIIA has three main research lines: Logic, reasoning and search; Case-based reasoning & learning; and Intelligent agents and multiagent systems.

INNAXIS considers as relevant problems those which develop systemic complexity, due to the interaction between multiple autonomous agents and to the diversity of organizational forms and of time and space scales. Transport systems and traffic management, macroeconomic evolution and financial markets, innovation and learning processes, threats and opportunities of globalization: in all these fields and many others, the combination of complex structures and social relationships with innovative technologies produce unexpected challenges to the traditional way of approaching scientific research. INNAXIS works to address those challenges, by using interdisciplinary approaches, as well as the state of the art in mathematical modelling, nonlinear dynamical systems and computational simulation.

The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (IEST) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) performs advanced interdisciplinary environmental research and training to contribute to robust understanding of the challenges posed by the interaction between society and the environment. It is distinguished by its international focus, multi-disciplinary base and cooperation between the various stakeholders within the framework of sustainability based on social civil responsibility. Advanced Communications and Computer Architecture consortium

The Advanced Communications and Computer Architecture (ACCA) research consortium conducts research and technology transfer to industry in the area of parallel computer systems, aiming at improving the performance and reliability of current server architectures for data centers and Internet servers, for a given cost and power consumption budget. This team develops research on processor, memory, and interconnect architectures, multiprocessor systems, system software, parallel file systems, dynamic load balancing, techniques to efficiently support data acquisition and client accesses through wireless networks, as well as improving the quality of resource access through the Grid. We also develop some distributed applications that can take advantage from these parallel platforms.

CASES (Milá i Fontanals Institute)

CASES (Complex Adaptive Socio-Ecological Systems) is a research group based at the Insitution Milá and Fontanals, CSIC. Our mission is to develop an innovative and transdisciplinary methodological framework to model and simulate ancient societies and their relationship with environmental transformations. CASES coordinates "SimulPast", a transdiciplinary research project with more than 60 researchers from several fields (archaeology, anthropology, computer science, environmental studies, physics, mathematics and sociology). Our aim is to improve the ability of simulating social networks and decision-making processes with special emphasis on resource management, socio-ecological resilience and sustainability by using empirical data and historical scenarios. We consider that the combination of long-term data (environmental and social) and supercomputer-based simulation is the most powerful approach for methodological development in social simulation.

We bring a long-term involvement in interdisciplinary research spanning between social and natural sciences. Our key expertise is the integration of environmental archaeology, palaeogeography and ethnoecology with ICT to explore heuristic models of sustainable human-environment interactions.  Niche construction and social theory in past societies. Grupo de Sociología Analítica y Diseño Institucional (GSADI)

GSADI promotes the use of innovative theories and methods in Analytical Sociology. Our main research interest is in building formal models of social mechanisms to explain the complex interaction of social norms, strategic rationality and institutional design.

To this effect GSADI researchers employ a variety of innovative methodologies and techniques, including laboratory experiments (inspired by recent advances in behavioural social science) and agent-based social simulation. Building on recent developments in the theory of collective action, GSADI contributors examine the conditions under which institutional design favours cooperation strategies, motivations for norm compliance, and the achievement of public goods. GSADI also conducts research in examining the effect of conditional and universal social benefits on labour incentives, the role of dispositions for norm compliance, and the practical contribution of altruism and reciprocity to the distributive principles underlying the welfare state.
